Ernesto Watson found his place at Tacoma School of the Arts (SOTA) after making the big decision to transfer from out of the school district. At SOTA, he discovered a passion for sound engineering, leading to a job as a sound technician at Urban Grace Church and a growing interest in music composition. As he prepares to graduate, Ernesto reflects on the growth he’s experienced and the confidence he’s gained thanks to SOTA’s supportive and empowering environment.
This is what Ernesto had to say about his experience:
What’s an accomplishment you’re proud of?
I'm proud of the doors that I opened and the opportunities I took advantage of while at SOTA. I got an awesome job at Urban Grace Church as a sound technician that I probably wouldn’t have gotten if I didn’t come to SOTA. I was running the sound for SOTA’s Showcase events, and working at Urban Grace has given me more experience running sound for venues. SOTA’s choir teacher Emily Wickman let me know about the job and encouraged me to go for it, and it’s been a great experience and a lot of fun.
What are your plans for next year?
I'm going to University of Puget Sound to study business and music. I also want to continue being a sound tech and get more into composing music.
How has your school experience helped prepare you for that pathway?
I really like the freedom we have at SOTA. The staff here treat you like an adult, and I think that helps us grow and find our passions. For some students it might not be the best fit, but for me it was. Being here has prepared me to push and do things for myself, and that’s what I love about this school.

Where have you shown the most grit in your high school career?
Definitely junior year. It was the most fun - but most busy - time of my high school career. I was working seven-hour shifts at Jimmy John’s after school. I could balance school and work, but there was almost no time for me to get better at guitar, music or any of my interests. I had to push through and make time to improve my music.
What are you looking forward to next year?
I haven’t seen much of the music side of UPS, so I’m excited to see that. I’m going to be living on campus and I’m just excited to see how I progress at the college level.
I really like it here at SOTA, so there is a part of me that’s sad to leave. SOTA is a great place for students to find who they are and be themselves.
What’s something your biggest fan would say about you?
I feel like they’d say that I can talk to anyone. I really like talking to people and can get along with pretty much anybody. I’m very personable and bubbly, but I know when to be serious and get things done.
Describe yourself in three words.
Passionate, bubbly and funny
